McKinney-Vento Act: Supporting Students Facing Homelessness
At Colorado Military Academy (CMA), we are committed to ensuring that all students have equal access to education, regardless of their housing situation. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that guarantees educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness.
Who Qualifies?
The McKinney-Vento Act defines homelessness as lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes students who are:
Living in shelters, transitional housing, or motels
Sharing housing due to economic hardship or loss of housing (doubling up)
Living in cars, parks, abandoned buildings, or other inadequate accommodations
Unaccompanied youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian
Rights of Eligible Students
Under the McKinney-Vento Act, students experiencing homelessness have the right to:
Immediate Enrollment – Students can enroll and attend classes even without required documentation such as proof of residency, immunization records, or school transcripts.
School Stability – Students may continue attending their school of origin (the school they last attended before becoming homeless) if it is in their best interest, even if they move outside the district.
Transportation Assistance – If needed, CMA will help coordinate transportation to and from the school of origin.
Access to Educational Services – Students are entitled to the same programs and services available to all CMA students, including special education, gifted programs, and extracurricular activities.
Free School Meals – Eligible students automatically qualify for free school breakfast and lunch.
Essential Supplies – CMA provides school supplies, backpacks, toiletries, and uniforms to support students experiencing homelessness.
